Summer Projects

This is the summer for sprucing up the area in front of our house. Last summer we got a start by digging out and hauling away the rock in the lower flower bed, and this spring we began ripping out the rotting landscape timber retaining wall and tearing up sod and adding some contour. Once we get the sod rolled up and hauled away we'll fill in to make more of a slope and start relocating plants.

We added a Viburnum hedge up by the corner of the house, near the spruce tree.
The second task so far was to team up with Joy's carpentry-savvy brother-in-law, Nate, to put a two-layer deck over our sagging concrete steps. Still some finishing touches left, but it's pretty much there. (We had to use Liquid Nails and some thin wood stripping to secure some of the decking that slid under the door frame; that's why the rocks are still there by the door, until the glue is completely dry.)
